WESTMINSTER

The Westminster Diocesan Service Team are organizing for the first time a special event for the vigil of Pentecost at Ealing Abbey on Saturday 11th June. This is in response to the call by the English NSC to CCR for the celebration of Pentecost to have a higher profile in the Church at large. The team hope to create a sense of that original first Pentecost described in chapter two of the book of Acts, when it describes the disciples gathered together in prayer waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit. They are inviting all the 30 groups in the Westminster diocese to join them in this. The event will begin with the celebration of the Eucharist at 6pm followed by two hours of worship, praise and expectant prayer, interceding for an outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The evening will end with refreshments and end about 9.30pm. For further details contact Vincent Turner on 07703 443110 or email vincent@faithcafe.org

PENTECOST VIGIL AT STAMFORD HILL, NORTH LONDON

Last Pentecost a very successful all night Pentecost vigil was organized at St Ignatius’ Church in Stamford Hill, North London from 9pm to 6am. The parish, which is run by the Jesuits, is large and very multi-cultural. Apart from the 1500 parishioners and 5 Sunday Masses, there are also two Polish Masses and a Spanish Mass for the Colombian community. The three charismatic prayer groups in the parish (English speaking, Spanish speaking and Polish speaking) all participated in the vigil, which was the inspiration of Fr Thomasz Klin SJ, a Polish charismatic Jesuit who is studying at HeythropCollege and runs the Polish speaking group. The darkened church was lit up by lighted candles up the central aisle leading up to the altar steps, representing the lost souls of a recent Polish air disaster. The words of the worship songs were typed in the three languages – Polish, English and Spanish – and projected onto a screen, and there were prayers and reflections in the three languages interspersed with silence, creating a great sense of unity. It was the first time there had been a Pentecost vigil in the parish and there was a very good turnout, especially up to the break for snacks at 1am. Amanda Taylor who was there commented, “I had a great sense of gratitude to God at seeing his hand in drawing the communities together in such a special way. There was a new sense of hope that despite the hurdles of language and cultural barriers, nothing was impossible to God and that he was already developing his plan for the future. We will be doing the same again this Pentecost...I can’t wait.”

PENTECOST VIGIL AT CATHOLICBIBLESCHOOL

The Catholic Bible School (CBS) outside Chichester run by Geoff and Gina Poulter, have run all night vigils for Pentecost over the last few years. Each year more people have come and last Pentecost 40 or so people took part in the vigil which began at 8pm and finished with 6.30am Mass and shared breakfast. A hard core of 30 people stayed the whole night, with the others dropping in for part of the time. The time was spent in the front of the blessed sacrament praying for the nation. Special rosary reflections were composed for this and meditated on every hour. Then every half an hour there was a short piece of music or a video clip with a reflection. At 5.30 in the morning, as the dawn broke people were prayed with and anointed to go out and spread the gospel. Most of the people who attended were those who have attended events at the CatholicBibleSchool, but there were also some new people who had never attended anything there before. These had been attracted by the publicity orheard about it from friends. Geoff Poulter commented, “A lot of people were really moved by the experience and we will definitely be doing it again next year, although I suspect we will have to move to the larger conference room this time to fit everyone in.” The CatholicBibleSchool also intends to run some kind of course in the Lent tide period to bring people into the baptim in the spirit experience.
